The Bernice King Interview

Kathleen interviews the youngest daughter of the late Martin Luther King Jr., Bernice King. Bernice’s interview is timeless, timely and critical to this moment, despite having taken place in 2009. She discusses her father’s unwavering  commitment to his values of Civil Rights and nonviolence ⏤ he never veered. She also candidly shares stories about the man and human beyond the name as well as the impact of his life and death on herself, her siblings and her mother. And her comments at the end of the interview? Prophetic.

Comments from Kathleen: I was deeply moved, surprised and had lightening in my veins after reading the autobiography of Martin Luther King Jr. I am grateful that Bernice joined me on air and provided so many compelling new insights about her father and what drove him. I got goosebumps re-listening to the very end of the interview, especially as it relates to right now.

Impermanence https://www.thestudiomadison.com/2020/impermanence/ Mon, 20 Apr 2020 13:04:30 +0000 http://studio2020.mhwebstaging.com/?p=22817 Impermanence is everywhere and always has been. Always. Prior to this current situation, most of us were asleep to that fact. Impermanence

Here is the interesting thing…this uncertainty is not new. Impermanence is everywhere and always has been. Impermanence is everywhere and always has been. Impermanence is everywhere and always has been. Always.

Prior to this current situation, most of us were asleep to that fact. We were lulled by concepts of normalcy and stability. Kathleen’s message is that we are now forced to face a truth that has always been right in front of us. We have been shaken awake and have to rise up to the present moment, the present situation. It will require the best of us. There will be a grieving process that we should honor. But we also need to be sure that we don’t waste too many of our moments in worry about the future or despair about the past. Handle right now with focus, clarity and great care. Face the truth about uncertainty and impermanence. You are never getting this moment back. Step up and into it – for you, your loved ones, the world.

Slow Money https://www.thestudiomadison.com/2019/slow-money/ Sun, 07 Apr 2019 16:05:07 +0000 http://studio2020.mhwebstaging.com/?p=20990 I realize on the surface that a show about economics might not be as sexy as some of our other topics. But this book, interview and topic have continued to haunt me for years.

Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau interviews Woody Tasch, the author of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms and Fertility Mattered. A beautiful book. Powerful and necessary concepts.

Comments from Kathleen:

I realize on the surface that a show about economics might not be as sexy as some of our other topics. But this book, interview and topic have continued to haunt me for years. Infinite and unchecked growth is not possible. It is not possible. The world cannot sustain it. This is the elephant sitting in your living room as the CNBC talking heads mouth off about quarterly reports and the minute to minute happenings on Wall Street. The Slow Money philosophy fundamentally changed the way I look at the problems our planet is facing. It changed the way I think about investing, politics, consumption, business ownership, careers (mine and others), food, the environment. I find myself coming back to these ideas again and again with each new challenge we face globally and locally. Within the pages of his book and the words that escape his lips — here is one man brave enough and wise enough to say it like it is. Thank God.

Stay with this interview right to the end…Woody reads a remarkable passage from the book and many of the key concepts are beautifully tied together. Please share this interview with others and subscribe to the podcast. A few highlights:

Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau interviews Dr. Richard O’Connor who talks about breaking the habits of depression. He is the author of a must-read book called Undoing Depression.

Comments from Kathleen:

I loved this interview (and this book) because despite the fact that I spent ten years in the mental health industry,  Dr. O’Connor hit on some things that I have never come across as it relates to depression. This is a must-listen for anyone struggling with depression as well as their families. And please please stick with the interview…we start with some basic fundamentals about the disorder, but the discussion gets much meatier and the insights more unique as we move forward. Please share this interview with others and subscribe to the podcast. We are re-releasing the content of The Kathleen Show because thousands of personal testimonials have poured in from listeners worldwide stating how much the information has impacted their lives.

A few highlights:

  • “We get good at depression.”
  • The impulse with depression is to withdraw. Continue to put yourself in joyful situations.
  • Insight on medications and alternative options.
  • Mindfulness. Doctor O’Connor describes mindfulness techniques in ways that are specific to those suffering from depression. I really enjoyed the language he used around mindfulness and think anyone listening can benefit.

This is a must-listen interview…exciting, inspiring, funny as hell.  Sir Ken discusses the importance of living life in a way that taps into your natural talent and personal passion. He shares several powerful examples and personal stories. When people are ‘in their element’, they feel most themselves,  most inspired and achieve at their highest levels. A few highlights:

  • How do schools kill creativity?

  • The journey is unique to each of us. Don’t look to your neighbor for answers…the answer is unique to you, within you.
  • Life is not linear. Every successful/creative person experiences immense struggle and setbacks. Expect that.
  • It’s not too late.

Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau interviews Vicki Robin, the co-author of the classic and groundbreaking book Your Money or Your Life. What do you trade the hours of your life for? How can you transform your relationship with money and forge financial independence? This was a pivotal book in Kathleen’s life.

Comments from Kathleen:

Does money serve you or enslave you? What are you trading to get a paycheck each week? I hated my own answers to these questions and my lack of awareness had led me to stay ten years in a job I hated to pay for crap I didn’t need. There are a lot of financial books out there, but Your Money or Your Life drastically impacted my point of view and my behavior surrounding money. (And never has a book title so fully captured the content.) I loved hearing Vicki Robin so candidly and personally discuss the concepts and back story of Your Money or Your Life.

Please share this interview with others and subscribe to the podcast. We are re-releasing the content of The Kathleen Show because thousands of personal testimonials have poured in from listeners worldwide stating how much the information has impacted their lives.

A few highlights:

  • Money equals life energy. Are you being a good steward?
  • Financial independence. How do you unhook yourself from consumer culture?
  • The definition of ‘enough’.
  • More money does not mean more happiness.
  • Get out of debt – NO CREDIT CARDS.
  • The connection between our finances and the health of the planet.

Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau interviews Dr. Carol Dweck who is a professor at Stanford University, a social psychologist and one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation. Dr. Dweck has held professorships at Columbia and Harvard Universities, she has lectured all over the world, and has been featured by the top media outlets in the country. Her fascinating book is called Mindset.

Comments from Kathleen:

In a word, this interview is thrilling. You will see yourself and everyone you know through a new lens resulting in an opportunity to unleash a more powerful side. Dr. Dweck has done fascinating research in this area. Looking back I can see so clearly the times and areas that a fixed mindset held me back and kept me small as well as my patchy journey to breaking out and away…toward unexpected growth. Listen to this interview and then listen again. A growth mindset can be learned. You can apply it to every area of your life – business and creativity and athletics and health and parenting and, and, and. I’ll be forever grateful to Carol for this interview and the direct impact it had on my life.

Dr. Dweck talks about:

  • The difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
  • The dramatic impact a fixed mindset has on the course of your life.
  • “In order to never fail, you have to limit your horizons…you have to shrink your world.” You have to live small.
  • It is cumulative.
  • How to recognize the inner dialogue of each mindset.
  • Can you change your mindset? Yes. Here’s how.
  • Fantastic advice for parents.
  • Learning is the highest value.”
