A healthy spine is a mobile spine. The physical components of back-bending require an openness of the shoulders, strength and flexibility of the lower back and expansion in the front body. Back-bending can be one of the most confrontational movements within the physical practice of yoga, yet the overall benefits encompass the physical, psychological and energetic states of being.
We will approach the physical challenges of back-bending by adequately warming up the body with applicable yoga poses. These warm-up poses consist of core strengthening, opening the hip flexors, psoas, shoulders, front of body, and special attention to proper alignment of hands and feet. Creating a solid foundation through strength, flexibility and alignment are important key components in furthering your backbend prosperity, we will keep this in mind as we approach the peak poses Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward facing Wheel pose) and Pincha Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel pose on the forearms).
As we move through these physical poses, mindfulness in your body is crucial. In the emotional realm, an awareness of the resistance toward back-bending is the first step to change and success. We will learn to confront emotions that arise without judgement and criticism, this is the first step to releasing unresolved issues. As with any pose the physical and emotional components weave together and create challenge and breakthrough – learn to set the proper path to work deeper, safer and more open in your practice.

Don’t let the word “master” scare you, these classes are for everyone. Master classes are an invaluable way to grow and enrich an existing yoga practice. The teacher will demonstrate, breakdown and workshop designated postures and sequences—including alignment, benefits, and contraindications. This allows each practitioner to go into chosen postures with more depth and instructional detail than in a regular class. Master classes tend to focus on subtle, finer points within a pose, and can change one’s entire practice with a single A-ha moment.
